Maarja comes from the field of education: she was a school teacher of history, social studies and philosophy for 13 years, and since 2020 she is the chairwoman of the Association of Estonian History and Society Teachers. She is author of several educational materials and has also published a textbook of social studies.

In 2020-2021, she curated two exhibitions in Vabamu Museum, focusing on the formation processes of Estonian society and more narrowly on the ways of becoming a citizen.

Since 2018, she has been giving lectures at Tallinn University, teaching various subjects of research methods with a qualitative focus. At the moment, she is doing her doctoral studies at the same university on the development of teachers’ professional identity and ability to act in the context of social upheavals. She also participates in the work of several research groups, to constantly supplement her methodological knowledge and skills.
